Making the Names Data Sing · Instructor answer key

Every question, answered with data.

Each question from the worksheet's answer key, written as a Malloy query and run against the U.S. Social Security Administration's baby names by state (1910–2021). Each section shows the question, the query, the result, the answer, and whether the key's predictions held up.

About the data.
  • Names with fewer than 5 babies in a state and year are left out, so counts of distinct names are lower bounds and small states have sparse data.
  • Comparisons across years use share or rank, never raw counts.
  • The 2020s include only 2020 and 2021.
  • To run the notebook in VS Code, put it next to model.malloy with data/usa_names.parquet, data/state_regions.csv and data/hurricanes.csv. The parquet and region files are in the textbook notebooks repo.
